Pilgrim?

 Pilgrim?
Across the dunes of desert's night
Where none should dare to linger long
The Pilgrim drudges onward and away
To a prize so distant, a prize so far
Where Holy City's legend's say
Where true honor, love, and peace hold sway.

Across the dunes of desert's night
Into jungles, dark and full of terrors
Pilgrim stumbles, and falls on back
Until faith restores the Pilgrim's Light.

Carrying torch through danger's flows
Pilgrim tarries not, but progress slows
As trees and vines, rivers and valleys
Fall across our Pilgrim's path,
Such are the trials that Pilgrims know.

Beyond the forests, where shadows dwell
The Pilgrim finds cities full of peopled throngs
And also temptations' dearest songs;
A test of Pilgrim's heart,
Is it enough to desire honor, love and peace
For Pilgrim's Progress to renew its lease?
Perhaps so, take heart Pilgrim, be strong.

Journeys are for Pilgrims to progress
From darkness into light, out of turmoil and unrest;
We seek true honor, love and peace,
To ends of Earth, North, South, West and East,
For hearts that are true, and constant happiness
Where pain will cease to trouble dreams
And lovers who are exactly what they seem,
If only our lives could be so blessed.

Pilgrim, hear this wisdom, from muse to heart,
Begin your journey, and do not cease
Once your foot is set upon the Pilgrim's step
Tarry not until journey's end is fully met,
For long is the trail, the journey, the path -
Long, and mayhap far, when at last you've gone far enough
You'll find that which you sought,
Though perhaps it'll be nearer and dearer than you had thought.

Dear Pilgrim, the journey's only just begun
It is not counted in miles nor in feet,
Merely measured in the scores of your heart's own beat,
And when your heart has travelled its perilous course
Truth, love, honor, and peace -
These gifts are yours to keep.

Artist's Thoughts & Comments:

This poem is in part a remembrance to my mother, who was deeply moved by "Pilgrim's Progress" by John Bunyan.

It is a dedication to those who search for perfection in life, love, honor and who go onward to find themselves and happiness in the revelations that come from the journey.
